Wild Orchids on the Isle of Formentera

At the time of my publication, ‘The Orchids of the Island of Formentera’ Dec. 2005, 8 species of European orchids were described for Formentera.  I was lucky enough to find another 6 species.
On 26 April 2011, Jordi Serapio, one of my friends from Ibiza, wrote to me that he had found both Ophrys lutea and Ophrys apifera during a visit to Formentera. I immediately followed this sensational report and found both O. lutea, almost withered on La Mola. I counted 278 flowering plants of O. apifera, both white and pink. Jordi Serapio, an excellent photographer, has his own website, which is well worth a visit and shows his sensitivity to the beauty of nature.

On 13 October 2018 - after years of searching - I finally found Spiranthes spiralis.

On 21 April 2025, thanks to Heike Strücker and Hansjörg Kneib, I was able to find Orchis simia in La Mola.
